Adani Ports & SEZ: Until a few years ago, the future of Uday Kumar, a resident of Muthukur Madhura Nagar in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, was full of uncertainties. He had become directionless. He also had the great responsibility of taking care of his family. But now after successfully completing the course in Maritime Operation, he is working as an executive at Krishnapatnam Port.
Uday says that after completing the training at Adani Skill Development Center (ASDC) in Krishnapatnam, I had full confidence in my skills, so I started gathering information about different ports and started applying for jobs. I got a call from Adani Krishnapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh. After giving the interview, I got selected at a salary of Rs 14,000. There are many people like Uday who have benefited from the ports operated by Adani Ports & SEZ. Adani Ports has emerged as a major center of employment generation among the youth. The way a large number of jobs have been created here has been inspiring.
Where Uday comes from, the other beneficiary Venkataramanaya is also there. After completing the training course in Container Operation, he is working as a Container Operation Executive in Future Z Company. They are well versed in container terminal operations, and have a better understanding of container handling equipment. Litun Barik, 20, from Dhamra, Odisha, was earlier a farmer but is now working as a petrol pump operator at Dhamra Port and earns Rs 8,000 a month, which is much more than what he earns as a farmer.
It tells how ports have the potential to create job opportunities. Investment in port infrastructure positively affects economic and social development in areas surrounding port areas. Shipping, cargo and industrial activities and services in the port area generate direct employment which helps in changing the conditions of the surrounding areas and also improves the living conditions of the local people.
Nagda Sachin’s life changed after he got a job as a junior crane operator at Mundra International Container Terminal (MICT) in Gandhidham, Gujarat. According to Sachin, while completing the course, I learned on RTGS simulated machine and it was a fun experience. It was a wonderful training experience which helped me understand my work. Ramesh Walji Chande who worked as a checker at Mundra Port. After doing a short term training course, he became a Junior Crane Operator at Mundra International Container Terminal.
Modibona Kiran Kumar, 30, from Nellore district, who is not even a 10th pass, is leading a good life. He is working as HMV driver in Sri Maruthi Nandan Company at Krishnapatnam Port. Akil, from Marripadu in Nellore, enrolled in the Unarmed Security Guard Course (ASDC) in Krishnapatnam and after four weeks of training, is employed with MSF Security at Adani Krishnapatnam Port Limited with a monthly salary of Rs 18,976. Not only local, Chiranjit Bauri, a resident of Ikadala in Bankura, West Bengal, works in Geo Structure at Krishnapatnam Port.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) is one of the largest commercial port operators in the country, accounting for a quarter of the total cargo movement. There are 13 ports in the seven coastal states of the country.
