India First Undersea Tunnels: India’s first undersea tunnel starts near Girgaum (ahead of Marine Drive), continues northwards under the Arabian Sea, Girgaum Chowpatty and Malabar Hill and ends at Breach Candy Park. It is a 2.07 kilometer long tunnel.
This Mumbai tunnel is being built by the BMC, which is part of the Rs 12,721 crore Mumbai Coastal Road project. The tunnel connects the 10.58-km-long MCRP Marine Drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and is only part of the Coastal Road Project.
The journey will be completed in 10 minutes
After the construction of the tunnel, the distance from Girgaum to Worli will decrease and the journey of 45 minutes will be completed in 10 minutes. According to the report of Indian Express, the diameter of this tunnel is 12.19 meters. Its depth is 17-20 meters from the sea level. A part of about 1 kilometer has been kept under the sea.
What will be the specialty of this tunnel
Fiber glass has been used to make the tunnel. The tunnel includes an entry into the Malabar Hill to a depth of 72 metres. There are 6 crossings inside the tunnel. Four lanes for pedestrians and two for bicyclists have been prepared. Tallon has three lanes of 3.2 metres. Although the third lane will be used for emergency.
Work started in 2021
The biggest Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has been used so far in the history of India. Its weight is more than 1,700 tonnes and it is about 12 meters long. The boring work started in 2021. The work of assembling and launching the TBM was started a year ago.
