In one of its posts, ICAR has also told how the nutritional content of Pro-Vitamin Maize developed by ICAR is much more than that of ordinary Maize. New provitamin-A enriched maize varieties include Pusa Vivek QPM 9 Sudhri and Pusa HQPM 5 Sudhri.
Provitamin maize is quite different from normal maize
According to a Twitter post issued by ICAR, the amount of provitamin-A in ordinary maize is 1 to 2 ppm, the amount of lysine is 1.5 to 2.0 percent and the amount of typtophan is 0.3 to 0.4 percent.
ICAR’s bio-cultivated Pusa Vivek QPM 9 improved variety has provitamin-A content of 8.15 ppm, lysine content of 2.67 percent and tryptophan content of 0.74 percent, which is much more than ordinary maize.
ICAR’s other biofortified variety Pusa HQPM 5 Sudhri contains 6.77 ppm provitamin, 4.25 lysine and 0.9 percent tryptophan.
