Turkiye Election: Voting will take place once again to elect a new president in Turkey, which is recovering from a devastating earthquake. In fact, the first round of voting took place on May 14, in which both incumbent President Recep Tayyip Ardoan and his main rival Kamal Kalchdarlu could not get more than fifty percent of the vote. In such a situation, on May 28, there will be a runoff voting i.e. a decisive contest.
Four candidates had staked claim for the presidential election being held in Turkey. Two candidates dropped out after the first phase of polling. Kemal Kalchdarlu, Sinan Ogan and Muharrem Inche along with the current President Recep Tayyip Ardoan presented their claim, but Sinan Ogan got only around five percent of the votes during the first phase of voting. On the other hand, in 2018, Muharram Inche, who finished second, pulled himself out of the presidential race three days before the voting. However, his name was registered on the ballot paper.
Why is voting happening for the second time?
When voting took place on May 14, no candidate got more than 50% votes, which led to the runoff round. Significantly, during the first phase of voting, Ardoan got 49.5 percent of the votes while Kamal Kalchdarlu got 44.9 percent of the votes. This is the reason that on May 28, there will be a runoff voting i.e. a decisive contest.
Ardoan has been in power for 20 years
Let us inform that Kamal Kalchdarlu is in the fray along with five other parties under the main opposition Republican People’s Party Nation Alliance. If Kalchdarlu wins, there will be a change after decades. This is because in the last 20 years, Recep Tayyip Ardoan has never faced defeat in the elections.
Why might there be change?
Turkey is facing many challenges at this time. After the devastating earthquake, inflation in the country has skyrocketed, the growth rate has decreased and the value of the country’s currency lira has fallen badly. There is anger among the public about Ardoan. There can be a change in this. This is one of the main reasons why Ardoan, who has been in power for twenty years, is under such pressure for the first time.
